Places of interest in Lee Green, SE12
The following buses stop very near to Lee station:
The area was previously occupied by Chinbrook Farm, a dairy farm. The park was first formally opened to the public in 1929 and was then a children's play area 8 acres (32,000 m2) in size, on the edge of the recently built Grove Park Estate; London County Council purchased a further 23 acres (93,000 m2) acres and the larger area was opened to the public in June 1937.[5]
The current house was built in the 1930s on the site of the original, and incorporates its Great Hall, which boasts the third-largest hammerbeam roof in England.[4] Fragments of the walls of other buildings remain visible around the gardens, and the 15th century bridge still crosses the moat. A little known fact about Eltham Palace is the reputed existence of at least three escape tunnels, which emerge in various parts of Eltham. One used to exit in the garden of the vicarage, which was adjacent to Eltham Baths (now demolished), and another exits in Avery Hill Park. This can be found by entering the park from the Southend Crescent gate, next to the church, and walking about 40 yards (37 m). On your left, you will see the remains of a brick construction. The third tunnel exits in the grounds of a former farm, just up the road from the palace.
St Olav's Church is located close to the River Thames in Rotherhithe at 1 St Olav's Square, Albion Street (next to the entrance to the Rotherhithe Tunnel) (51°29²57³N 0°3²15³W / 51.49917°N 0.05417°W / 51.49917; -0.05417). The nearest Underground stations are Rotherhithe or Canada Water. The congregation is part of Sjømannskirken (The Norwegian Church Abroad or The Norwegian Seamen's Churches.) The Finnish Church (see above) is located nearby in Albion Street.
All 42 houses are Grade I listed buildings.[1] They were designed by John Nash and built by James Burton in 1825. At each end of the terrace there is a Corinthian arch bearing at the top the terrace name in large lettering on a blue background, probably the largest street signs in London. Five of the houses are semi-detached. One of the semi-detached houses, Nash House (3 Chester Terrace, although the main entrance is on Chester Gate), has a bust of John Nash on its west side,[1] looking identical to the bust on All Souls Church, Langham Place.
