The Croydon transmitting station (also known as the NTL Tower) is a broadcasting and telecommunications facility located in Upper Norwood, London, England (grid reference TQ332696), in the London Borough of Croydon, owned by Arqiva. It was founded in 1955 and initially used a small lattice tower. The tower present on the site today is 152 metres (499 ft) high and was built in 1962.
The circuit was used for the prologue time trial of the Tour of Britain bicycle racing on 9 September 2007.
Since 1995, the tower has also been in use as one of five London transmitters for the BBC DAB multiplex. This was joined in 1999 by the Digital One DAB service, and a further local DAB multiplex has also since started transmitting.
Swimming clubs include Edmonton Phoenix S.C., Enfield S.C. and Griffins S.C. of Enfield.
The pitch is maintained by Stadium Grow Lighting,[8] a series of heated lights which maintains the grass quality and also allows the grass to grow at all times of the year and in all seasons. The SGL system controls all aspects of the pitch when in use, including variables such as water intake, heat allowance, light allowance and other aspects which decrease the quality of a football pitch. The pitch is available for hire[9] when not in matchday use, with full Premier League officials and even Jumbotron use, hoarding advertising and a DVD-quality recording of the match available along with the executive suites for weddings, birthdays and other functions.
