Places of interest in Edgware, UB10
On 6 December 1992 a new station, constructed along the line to the south of the original, was opened. The new station was required to enable expansion and rerouting of the A40 (Western Avenue), which now runs through the original site. Following its opening, the station won the Underground Station of the Year, 1992.
Station building
Prior to the Second World War plans had been made for a number of extensions to the Central Line. The London Passenger Transport Board's (LPTB's) 1935-40 New Works programme included the extension of the Central Line to run alongside the Great Western Railway (GWR) tracks from North Acton to South Ruislip and the GW&GCJR tracks from there as far as Denham, although the introduction of Metropolitan Green Belt caused the extension to be cut back to West Ruislip. Had the extension been built in full, the next station would have been Harefield Road. Preparatory work on this extension had started just before the war and a section of trackbed had been constructed for the extension can be seen beyond the buffer stops of the Central line tracks alongside the National Rail line.
Edgware railway station and the tracks to Mill Hill East continued to be used for goods services until 1964 when it was completely closed. Today, the track has been removed and the platforms and station buildings have been demolished. The site of Edgware railway station is now occupied by a shopping centre, alongside part of whose car park runs a small stretch of the former trackbed, leading to the still-standing bridge over the Northern line tracks into Edgware Underground station.
Burnt Oak tube station is a London Underground station in Burnt Oak, north London, on Watling Avenue, off the A5 (the Edgware Road, originally a Roman Road known as Watling Street). The station is on the Edgware branch of the Northern Line, between Edgware and Colindale stations, and in Travelcard Zone 4.
