St Anne's Church serves the area and is located in Larkshall Road (at the western end of Hatch Lane). Originating in 1891 as a Mission Room, a permanent church was built and given its own separate parish in 1953.
Motor cycle speedway racing was staged at the Walthamstow Greyhound Stadium in Chingford Road in 1934 and between 1949 and 1951. Between 1949 and 1951 the team, known as the Walthamstow Wolves, raced in the National League Second Division with moderate success. At that time all the other London clubs, Wembley, Wimbledon, West Ham, Harringay and New Cross raced in the First Division. The sport left the stadium in the 1950s owing to declining attendance and complaints of noise from local residents. The track itself can still be seen but has been covered in tarmac for easier maintenance of the dog track.
According to legend, King Charles II is said to have knighted a loin of beef ("Sir Loin") at Friday Hill; however, there are other places that also claim this honour, and the story is generally assumed to be apocryphal. The current pub "The Sirloin" on Friday Hill (before the estate was sold) was called Little Friday Hill House.
Between 1805 and 1809 the castle became the home of the East India Company College. In 1822 a general dispensary was established at the castle by the Rev. Thomas Lloyd, who was a prime mover in charitable work in the town.
Hertford has many food, drink and entertainment establishments which have grown in number considerably since the eighties and nineties. It attracts people from nearby towns, and often the North London suburbs. There are approximately 25 pubs and clubs in the area,[15] and around 35 restaurants, takeaways and snack bars.[16] Hertford also hosts swimming pool and gym facilities, and has also recently acquired a small skatepark, based in Hartham Common.
