Lancaster Gate station was opened on 30 July 1900 by the Central London Railway (now the Central line). The original station building was typical of the work of the line's original architect Harry Bell Measures. It was demolished and a new surface building constructed as part of the development above in 1968. The development was designed by T P Bennett & Son as an office block but converted soon after into a hotel. In 2004-05 the lower floors of the hotel were re-clad in white stone to a design by Eric Parry Architects.[2] The hotel received planning permission for the re-cladding to include the station faƧade[3], but this did not proceed.
IN HONOUR OF THOSE WHO SERVED IN THE WORLD WARS
1914 1918 1939 1945 3312 MEN AND WOMEN OF THE GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY. THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES ARE INSCRIBED ON A ROLL OF HONOUR DEPOSITED BENEATH THE BRONZE FIGURE. ||
The station complex is bounded at the front by Praed Street and at the rear by Bishop's Bridge Road, which crosses the throat of the mainline station on the recently replaced Bishop's Bridge. On the west side of the station is Eastbourne Terrace, while the east side is bounded by the Paddington arm of the Grand Union Canal. The mainline station stands in a shallow cutting, a fact obscured at the front by an hotel building, but which can be clearly seen from the other three sides.[5]
Clients at the arena include many clubs for children and teenagers plus running & athletics clubs ranging from Kent AC[2] to Blackheath Harriers AC.[3] Ladywell Arena is also home to the South East London Wheelchair Racing Club and the Lewisham Special Olympic Club. The arena is located in the London Borough of Lewisham and is owned by Lewisham Leisure an arm of the council.
The school is very closely linked with the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers, a City Livery Company, which gives occasional financial support, mainly for capital projects. It also awards three bursaries each year to leavers who are going on to university. Four members of the Company are foundation governors. Although secular, the school also has historical links with the parish of Lewisham.
