The Rochdale and Facit Railway was extended to Bacup in 1883. It rose over a summit of 967 feet (295 m) between Britannia and Shawforth. At Bacup passengers used the terminus opened 30 years earlier by the East Lancashire Railway, joining the Rossendale line just outside the station. Closed in 1947.[27]
Probably the best-known Burnley figure in the field of entertainment is actor and gay rights activist Sir Ian McKellen,[81] who was born in the town in 1939. Other actors born in the town include Mary Mackenzie, Irene Sutcliffe and Julia Haworth (Coronation Street), Richard Moore[82](Emmerdale), Alice Barry[83] and Jody Latham[84](Shameless), Kathy Jamieson, Hannah Hobley (Benidorm), Natalie Gumede (Ideal) and film actor Lee Ingleby. Screenwriter Paul Abbott, creator of Shameless, television producer and executive Peter Salmon[85] and comedian Jeff Brown were also born in Burnley. Also Coronation Street regular Malcolm Hebden grew up in the town.
In the corner of the ground between the James Hargreaves Stand and Jimmy McIlroy Stand there is a 36mē Barco video wall, which was previously situated in the Cricket Field Stand between 2007 and 2009. In the car park behind the James Hargreaves Stand is Stadium Fitness, which includes a gymnasium, table-tennis facilities and a large sports hall.Outside the ground, between the Jimmy McIlroy and Bob Lord stands is the Burnley club shop, otherwise known as the Clarets Superstore. The club's offices are sited above the store.[21]
The Forest contains two Marilyns; Hail Storm Hill and Freeholds Top, as well as the summit of Great Hameldon. Geographically, it is sandwiched between the West Pennine Moors to the west and the South Pennines to the east.
