Tourner Bury

A new golf course has been built to the north of Tournerbury Wood. To the south lies Mengham Rythe and to the east Chichester Harbour.

Mengham

There is said to be a 'grave' in St Mary's churchyard which is in fact an entrance to a tunnel. This tunnel allegedly goes down to the shore and in past times smugglers used it to bring contraband items into the mainland. The tunnel, found under the name "Mary Gritt's" leads around 1/2 a mile underground. Where there has been a cave-in, a lot of wildlife is seen emerging from the grave.

Quarr Abbey

The name Quarr comes from 'quarry', because there used to be a stone quarry in the neighbourhood. The original title of the monastery was the Abbey of our Lady of the Quarry. Stone from the quarry was used in the Middle Ages for both ecclesiastical and military buildings, for example for parts of the Tower of London.
