Sudbury

During the eighteenth century Sudbury became famous for its local artists. John Constable painted in the area, especially the River Stour. Painter Thomas Gainsborough was born in Sudbury in 1727, and was educated at Grammar School.[13] His birthplace, now named Gainsborough House, is now a museum to his work and is open to the public. It houses many valuable pictures and some of his family possessions. A statue of Gainsborough was unveiled in the town centre outside St Peter?s Church on Market Hill in 1913.[3]

Etchingham

Henry Corbould FSA, whose design was used for the Penny Black, was travelling back to London from the coast, along what is now the A21. He was taken ill near Hurst Green and was given rest and shelter at a local hostelry; sadly he never recovered from his illness and died in his room at the public house. Henry Corbould was therefore buried in Etchingham parish church, The Assumption of Blessed Mary and St Nicholas. There is a memorial tablet on the wall of the church, which for many years was believed to be the only known likeness of Corbould. However, Henry Corbould drew a self-portrait late in life. The original is in a private collection.[1].

Ipswich Airport

The airfield was delicensed and ceased to be registered by the Civil Aviation Authority on 31 December 1996. Not through lack of use, nor through public pressure; following the announcement of intention to close by Ipswich Borough Council in late September 1996, there were petitions to keep the site as an operating airport, this culminated with a sit-in which started on 1 January 1997; the last aircraft left over a year later in January 1998

Ipswich Racecourse

The hurdles were unpopular with jockeys and horses alike which, although built to National Hunt rules, lacked wings, which increased the risk of the horses running out unless the jockey approached the centre of the hurdle.
