Places of interest in St Austell, PL27
The show was held at Truro between 1827 and 1857, but from then on the venue changed every year. Since 1960 the showground at Wadebridge has been its permanent home. [1]
Two early stones have been found embedded in the original village church. One bears a 'Constantine' form of a Chi-Rho cross which may date to the 5th century; it was afterwards rebuilt into the wall directly above the apex of the arch of the doorway of the new church. The second is simple memorial stone bearing the name of 'Clo[tualus] [son of] Mo[bra]ttus', dated between the fifth to eighth centuries, and now stands in the churchyard.[4] Arthur G. Langdon (1896) recorded the existence of six stone crosses in the parish, including two in the churchyard.
The word 'towan' means 'sand dune' in Kernewek, the Cornish language and occurs in numerous placenames (Porthtowan for example)[1]. However, The Towans usually refers to the three-mile (5 km) stretch of coastal dunes which extends north east from the estuary of the River Hayle (at 50°11²33³N 5°25²52³W / 50.19256°N 5.43111°W / 50.19256; -5.43111) to Gwithian beach (at 50°13²48³N 5°23²29³W / 50.22991°N 5.39145°W / 50.22991; -5.39145) with a mid-point near Upton (at 50°12²38³N 5°24²28³W / 50.21053°N 5.40768°W / 50.21053; -5.40768Coordinates: 50°12²38³N 5°24²28³W / 50.21053°N 5.40768°W / 50.21053; -5.40768)[2].
A famous landmark is Godrevy Lighthouse, situated at the eastern end of Hayle Towans, said to have inspired Virginia Woolf's novel To the Lighthouse.
Four new galleries were opened as part of a refurbishment project in early 2009.[3] The renovated ground floor galleries were formally opened by HRH Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh on 25 May 2009.[4] He is Patron of the Friends of Plymouth City Museums & Gallery, which was founded in 1951.
