Places of interest in Watford, WD17
Although it is the terminus of the branch, it was not planned as such, with an extension to the town centre (Watford Central station) envisaged but never constructed. The original Watford Central station building was in Watford High Street, opposite the junction with Clarendon Road, and has known many guises. In the 1950s this was the Grange Furniture Store and the original Underground station canopy was still in evidence[2]. A JD Wetherspoon pub, The Moon Under Water, now occupies the building. For many years, a bus service ran from Watford station to the High Street.
Watford won the then Nationwide Division Two championship in 1998, then the following season (1998?99) reached the Premiership by winning the First Division Play-Off Final, beating Bolton Wanderers F.C. at Wembley Stadium by two goals to nil. The club were relegated the season after.
At present the newest part of the stadium, the Rookery Stand was built over the course of the 1994?95 season. Another former terrace, the all-seater Rookery stand has a capacity of 6,960. Larger than the Vicarage Road stand, it has facilities on two levels. It also holds most of the club's administrative areas, along with the club shop, which was moved to its current location in November 2005 from a site on Vicarage Road. The stand cost £1.6 million to build, approximately £300,000 of this figure was contributed by the Football Trust, with the remaining money coming from the sale of Paul Furlong and Bruce Dyer by owner Jack Petchey at the end of the 1993?94 season.
London bus routes U1 and U10.
