Hertford Castle was a Norman castle situated by the River Lea in Hertford, the county town of Hertfordshire, England.
Hertford (pronounced /Ë?hÉ?rtfÉ?rd/ or /Ë?hÉ?rfÉ?rd/) is the county town of Hertfordshire, England, and is in the East Hertfordshire district of the county. In 2006 East Hertfordshire was ranked within the top 10 places to live in the UK following a survey commissioned by the Channel 4 TV station. Forming a civil parish, the 2001 census put the population of Hertford at about 24,180.[1] Recent estimates are that it is now around 28,000. The name is Anglo Saxon and means the ford frequented by harts or stags. The town of Meryton in the Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice is thought to have been based on Hertford.[2]
Rye House Stadium is a greyhound racing and speedway venue in Rye House near Hoddesdon,Hertfordshire. It is situated adjacent to the River Lea Navigation.
Hoddesdon is the only small town in Britain with a sizeable Italian community. Italians emigrated to the Lee Valley in the 1950s and 60s to work in the nearby garden nurseries, and they and many of their descendants are still resident in the area. The Festival of San Antonio is celebrated annually in June in Hoddesdon with a street parade.
It was once suggested that the Victoria Line could be extended to Woodford or South Woodford stations.[citation needed]
