Places of interest in Waltham Abbey, CM15
The name 'Hedley Walter' was used in reference to the school's first Head of Governors.
The diocese covers the Traditional County of Essex, an area of 3,959 km² comprising the Non-Metropolitan County of Essex, the Unitary Authorities of Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock, and the London Boroughs of Barking & Dagenham, Havering, Newham, Redbridge and Waltham Forest, matching Essex's historic boundaries and the Anglican Diocese of Chelmsford. The see is in the town of Brentwood where the seat is located at the Cathedral Church of Saint Mary and Saint Helen.
The licence to found the school, as "The Grammar School of Antony Browne, Serjeant at the Law, in Brentwood" was granted by Queen Mary to Sir Antony Browne on 5 July 1558, and the first Schoolmaster, George Otway, was appointed on 28 July 1558.
Local sites of interest include the Thameside Theatre, the Thurrock History Museum, Grays Beach and the now-disused State Cinema (which was used as a location in the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and for sections of Jamiroquai's video of "Deeper Underground" for the film Godzilla).
