London Stansted Airport

Beginning in 1966, after Stansted was placed under BAA control, the airport was used by holiday charter operators wishing to escape the higher costs associated with operating from Heathrow and Gatwick. From the outset, however, BAA and the British government planned to develop Stansted into London's third airport, to relieve Heathrow and Gatwick of excess congestion in the future. The airport's first terminal building opened in 1969 and was expanded the next year to handle the growing number of passengers.

Stansted Mountfitchet

Other village attractions include the House on the Hill Toy Museum, which its owners claim "is the largest toy museum in Europe". Located next to the castle, both attractions are owned by Alan Goldsmith. The museum opened in 1991 and holds over 80,000 toys, mostly from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Henlow

The Parish church, parts of which are 13th century, is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin.

RAF Henlow

Today, RAF Henlow houses the Directorate of Engineering Interoperability (DEI), which is part of the Defence Communication Services Agency (DCSA) within the Defence Logistics Organisation. In addition it houses the Joint Arms Control Implementation Group (JACIG), HQ Specialist Police Wing (including the newly-formed Tactical Provost Wing), the RAF Centre for Aviation Medicine (RAF CAM) , DE&S, 616 Volunteer Gliding Squadron which operates Vigilant T1 motor gliders and a training section for the Bowman (communications system). A civilian flying school also operates from the site.

Hadleigh Castle

The English painter John Constable visited Hadleigh in 1814 and made a minute drawing of the castle as preparation for ten oil sketches and a single painting. The oil painting was produced in 1829 and exhibited at the Royal Academy in the same year.[9] One of the sketches is currently displayed at the Tate Gallery, London,[10] while the painting now hangs in the Yale Center for British Art at New Haven, United States.[11]
