On the north side of the town, the A127 Southend Arterial Road and on the south side is the A13. The A127 is nearest to Basildon Town Centre at approximately 1.5 miles and the A13 approximately 2 miles. They both allow easy access to the M25 and the rest of the motorway network, placing Stansted within 36 miles (58 km), Gatwick within 51 (82 km) and London City Airport just 25 miles (40 km). The A127 and the A13 are both important commuter trunk roads to London as well as linking the town to Southend. Locally, the A13 gives easier access to Pitsea and Vange and the A127 gives more convenient access to the town centre and Laindon.
The Cathedral has relationships with schools in the town and is closely linked to The Cathedral School, St Cedd's School, King Edward VI Grammar School (Chelmsford) and Chelmsford County High School for Girls.
Broomfield is the site of an important Anglo-Saxon burial which was discovered by workmen in 1888 after which there was a partial excavation. A more complete excavation was later made by CH Reid. Finds include weapons, gold ornaments and domestic items such as glassware, cups and buckets. The finds are now in the British Museum. The burial has been compared with Taplow and Sutton Hoo.[8]
The 2MT call-sign has not been re-issued for regular use since 1922. However in 2001, a special permit was given for it to be used to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first wireless transmission across the Atlantic by Marconi in 1901. Details of this event can be found on the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society website.
Rangers host events and activities throughout the year including stargazing walks in winter, glow-worm hunts in summer and the seasonal Santa in the Park at Christmas.[13]
