Places of interest in Henlow, SG16
Henlow was chosen as a military aircraft repair depot in 1917. The Officers Engineering School moved there in 1927. During World War II Henlow was used to put together Hawker Hurricanes which had been shipped over from Canada as skeletons in shipping containers and then fit all of the parts. It was also used as a repair base. Hawker Hurricane fighters were dismantled there to be shipped to Malta as well. After the war Henlow became the RAF Signals Engineering Establishment, but was reduced to a Radio Engineering Unit in 1980.
Henlow is a village and civil parish in the district of Central Bedfordshire in Bedfordshire, England.
In 2010 the society marks its 25th anniversary and has replaced its 10" Newtonian reflector with a 14" Meade LX200 computerised telescope, which will be officially unveiled at a Public Star Party on September 18.
Kincaid commissioned architect Cecil Hignett to design a state-of-the art factory of great beauty. The factory was completed in 1920, Kincaid had achieved his goal; The Spirella Building provided the perfect environment for his workers to be happy, contented and highly productive, and was worthy of being called "The Factory of Beauty".
Currently, only cropmarks and slight earthworks remain. This site is a Scheduled Monument.
