This early period of the town's history was humorously depicted in the children's television show, Maid Marian and her Merry Men, where it was largely portrayed as a mass of mud.
The Burton & District Cricket League has many notable clubs, including Burton Cricket Club.
The first fixture at the new ground was held on 16 July 2005 with a pre-season friendly against Chester City.[14] A crowd of 1,341 saw Chester defeat the Brewers 1-0, with the distinction of scoring the first goal at the stadium landing to Chester trialist Avun Jephcott.[14] The first Albion player to score at the ground was trialist Kevin Street in a pre-season friendly against Hull City, a match that ended in a 2-2 draw.[15] The ground was officially opened on 14 November 2005 with a friendly match against Manchester United.[16] Special guests Sir Alex Ferguson, Pirelli managing director Dominic Sandivasci and Barbara Clough, widow of Brian Clough and mother of then-Brewers manager Nigel Clough, marked the ceremony by unveiling a plaque.[16] In the match itself, a crowd of 6,065 saw the Brewers defeat the young United side 2-1.[16] Just before this match the stadium's official capacity having been fully completed had been set by Staffordshire County Council's safety committee at 6,068.[17]
Since their FA Cup success, Burton have competed in the upper reaches of the Conference. The Brewers attained their highest ever league position to date in 2007?08, finishing in the end of season play-off places for the first time in their history, before losing in their play-off to Cambridge United. As of April 2009, they were top of the Conference National, setting a league record for the most consecutive wins in a row. This is despite losing the services of manager, Nigel Clough, to Derby County with Roy McFarland installed as caretaker manager until the end of the season. When the team was 19 points clear at the top of the table, Conference sponsors Blue Square declared Burton the winners of the 2008/09 title in a PR stunt in which they paid out all bets. After that announcement in February, however, the club saw their lead reduced week by week, though they still secured promotion to the Football League, despite losing 2-1 away at Torquay United in the final game of the season when Cambridge United could only manage a goalless draw to Altrincham.
A Norman castle was built by Baldwin FitzGilbert. In medieval times there was motte and double bailey castle which formed an unusual concentric plan. The castle was destroyed after being used by Cromwell's troops in 1645 and a farmhouse was built on the site. Traces of the enclosed mound and inner and outer moats are all that now survive.[1]
