Places of interest in Hope Valley, S33
With around 144 m (472 ft) of relative height, Win Hill is only a few metres short of qualifying as a Marilyn.
The river is sometimes used for recreational purposes, mostly kayaking. This is usually limited, as in times of normal rainfall the river is too shallow, but after heavy rainfall the river becomes a raging torrent. When the river is in this state it becomes very technical, with many weirs and holes. The river is quite narrow and relatively shallow, making the rocky bed hazardous for kayakers who capsize. By far the most challenging part of the river is where a small tributary of the Ashop flows swiftly through a steep tunnel under the road. This is the higher-volume upper section of the river. At times of high water the river is plagued by fallen trees, which must be navigated around. A number of fences have also been built across the river, making running it very stop and start, and dangerous if the river is flowing quickly.
Many of the new town's residents were originally from the West Midlands conurbation, which includes Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Dudley and Walsall. The vast majority of the council house tenants in Telford were rehoused from inner city slums in Birmingham. Some controversy and bad feeling still exists in some communities as a result of what some saw as the influx of those from the city slums. The name "overspill" was often used as a derogatory term for these residents. Some individuals still refuse to put Telford in their address, instead using the original local name (such as Wellington or Dawley).
An old tale is of a cow falling into the canal at one end then passing through the tunnel before rescue. It is said it was taken to the nearby pub and revived with a drink. There is also a large reservoir that feeds the canal and boating takes place on here. Barge trips are also available on the canal.
It is located a mile to the east Foulridge and it is possible to see other local towns such as; Colne, Nelson, Trawden, Barnoldswick and Earby. On a clear day most of Lancashire and the Yorkshire Dales are seen from here.
