Bennerley Viaduct

Bennerley viaduct's wrought iron construction saved it from demolition. The demolition contractors who tendered for the contract to demolish the viaduct put forward amounts which were considered too high. The reason given for the high cost was that wrought iron structures could not be cut up with an oxy-acetylene torch and would have to be taken apart rivet by rivet.[12] The viaduct survived to become a grade II* listed structure. The Meldon Viaduct was refurbished in 1996 and is now part of the Granite Way cycle and footpath in Devon.[7] Bennerley Viaduct is managed by Sustrans and may yet be used in the future as part of the national foot and cyclepath network in a similar way to the Meldon Viaduct.[13] It is on the Buildings at Risk Register.

Awsworth

Awsworth once had a station on the Great Northern (later LNER) line from Nottingham to Derby which crossed the Erewash Valley to Ilkeston over the Bennerley Viaduct, closed in September 1964. At Awsworth Junction, a short distance to the east, a branch line curved away northwards to Pinxton. This line closed in January 1963. Near the junction it crossed a viaduct almost half a mile in length across the Giltbrook valley, known variously as Awsworth Viaduct, Giltbrook Viaduct, Kimberley Viaduct, but more commonly in the local area as the "Forty Bridges," though the actual combined number of arches and girder spans was 43. This viaduct is no more, but the Bennerley Viaduct is still in place.

Derby

In 2003 the University of Nottingham opened a graduate entry medical school based at Derby City General Hospital.

Darley Abbey

Darley Abbey was originally the site of an Augustinian priory called Darley Abbey (or Darley Priory) which was established in 1137 and dedicated to St Helena. It had originally been founded in Derby by Robert de Ferrers, 2nd Earl of Derby and later removed to Darley. The Abbot was granted by this Earl and some of his successors many privileges in Duffield Forest and Chase.[1] The Abbey was founded about 1140, and soon became one of the richest Abbeys in Derbyshire. The Monks owned and operated the original Derby School, but the Abbey was almost totally obliterated during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. There are only two remaining buildings from the monastic period. One is now The Abbey Pub which was renovated to its present state in 1978, and the other makes up part of a private dwelling on Abbey Lane.[2]
