Places of interest in Bakewell, DE45
It was a motte and bailey castle built in the 12th century. Now only the earthworks remain.[1][2]. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Longstone has two educational facilities. Longstone Primary School which is a non denominational primary school built in 1957 and based at Redhall Grove, although originally was based in Longstone Road. Recently an additional school built next to Longstone Primary School called Redhall Primary School supports children with moderate learning difficulties.
The school was opened on Tuesday, 9 January 1951 by Walter Hamblin, formerly headmaster of Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, with 26 pupils. In 2004 the library was named after him.
The station became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway during the Grouping of 1923. The station then passed on to the London Midland Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948.
According to the 2001 UK census, the industry of employment of residents in Altrincham was 18.4% property and business services, 16.0% retail and wholesale, 12.1% manufacturing, 10.7% health and social work, 8.3% education, 8.3% transport and communications, 5.8% finance, 5.7% construction, 4.2% hotels and restaurants, 4.2% public administration and defence, 0.8% agriculture, 0.8% energy and water supply, 0.2% mining, and 4.6% other. This was roughly in line with national figures, except for the town's relatively high percentage of workers in property and business services.[63] The census recorded the economic activity of residents aged 16?74, 5.3% looking after home or family, 4.3% permanently sick or disabled, 3.2% students without jobs, 2.2% students were with jobs, and 2.4% economically inactive for other reasons.[51] The 2.2% unemployment rate of Altrincham was low compared with the national rate of 3.3%.[52]
